FAQ about a “Morning of Solitude”

What is a morning of solitude?

It’s a three hour time set aside to spend with your heavenly Father – just Him and you.  It’s time spent unplugged from your normal routine, the demands of your job, other people, and your mobile phone.

When will it be held this time?

On Saturday morning, December 3rd, 2016,  from 9 AM – 12 PM, at the Grace Valley Ministries property located at 435 Colmer Road in Canton, GA.

Why is it a good idea?

In the gospel accounts of the life of Jesus, we see him often getting away to connect with his heavenly Father.  If Jesus in his humanity felt the need to make this a priority, certainly we do too.  This was especially evident just prior to his entering into a significant event or task in his ministry (the start of his public ministry, the choosing of his disciples, the night before his betrayal.)  We all need an occasional time of concentrated focus to renew the ease with which we connect with our heavenly Father.

Why is it so counter-intuitive for us to desire solitude?

We all tend to suffer from the “Martha” syndrome (Luke 10:38-41.)  We come to believe that our activity leads to productivity, and we subtly become dependent on our own ability to carry out tasks.  Furthermore, we tend to define ourselves by how much we get done.  But Jesus rebuked Martha by saying, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed.  Mary has chosen what is better (sitting at Jesus’ feet), and it will not be taken away from her.”

A morning of solitude is counter-intuitive because we don’t think we can afford the time away from our busy and active schedules.  It feels like we’re not getting anything done.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Our relationship with the Father is our greatest privilege and the fuel by which we can serve with greater power and strength.

In addition, we are used to lots of noise in our lives.  TVs, smartphones and tablets, radios, iPods, and conversations often keep us from ever hearing God speak in His “still small voice.”

Who should attend?

Any believer in Jesus Christ, but the busier you are the better.  Too often those who are busiest serving the Lord and those who have positions of leadership in the church are the last to recognize the need for a periodic getaway with God.

What will I do with all that time?

When you arrive at 9 AM on Saturday morning, December 3rd, a brief introduction will be offered and some materials to help you should you need them.  These materials will serve as an optional guide through your morning.

What will be the hardest part of this?

Two things:  Number one, just doing it.  Committing to it.  You’ll find every reason not to do this.  Secondly, once there, getting settled in.  You will be very conscious of your body and distractions in the environment, not to mention the buzzing thoughts in your head.  You’ll likely need a good twenty minutes at least in the beginning just to settle into the presence of the Lord.  You will be able to notice your interfering thoughts and then just let them go like the clouds that pass overhead and, eventually, you will be able to just be present with God.

The goal is not to achieve some momentous breakthrough spiritually or to achieve some incredible new insight, but simply to give God your undivided attention.  Brennan Manning was once asked after spending time in solitude what he got out of it.  He answered, “I don’t know.  I just figure God likes it when I show up.”

What will be the schedule?

9:00 – Brief Introduction and Orientation

9:20 – Seek out your place of solitude on our Grace Valley property

9:30-12:00 – Spend time with God

12:00-12:30 (Optional) Re-gather as a group for a short time to debrief

What should I bring?

Bring your own lawn chair, your Bible, pen, and notebook.  Also, bring any snacks and drinks you might need through the morning.   Bring a blanket if it’s cold and we will have a bonfire going if necessary.

Where is the Grace Valley property located?

At 435 Colmer Road in Canton, GA.  Follow Hwy 20 West of Canton across Knox Bridge near Allatoona Lake until you come to Willie West Road.  Turn here.  A short distance down Willie West Road, take the fork left onto Colmer Road.   Colmer Road turns into a gravel road for the last block or so before reaching the Merrefield’s residence.  The property adjoins their residence, so we will gather in their yard initially and then take a brief hike from their house to the property where we will eventually be spreading out.

Do I need to RSVP if I’m coming?

It’s not essential, but we would like to hear from you if you’re planning to come just so we’ll have a rough idea of how many materials to have on hand.  Please let us know by email or phone:

Why is it a good idea?  In the gospel accounts of the life of Jesus we see him often getting away to connect with his heavenly Father.  If Jesus in his humanity felt the need to make this a priority, shouldn’t we?   My computer gets bogged down and occasionally needs to be defragged, registries cleaned, old programs dumped.  I function much the same.  I need an occasional time of concentrated focus to renew the speed with which I connect with my heavenly Father.  There’s no substitute for the time required to offload life’s burdens in the presence of my heavenly Father.

Why is it so counter intuitive for us to desire solitude?  We all tend to suffer from the “Martha” syndrome (Luke 10:38-41.)  We come to believe that our activity leads to productivity, and we subtly become dependent on our own ability to carry out tasks.    Furthermore, we tend to define ourselves by how much we get done.  But Jesus rebuked Martha by saying, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one things is needed.  Mary has chosen what is better (sitting at Jesus’ feet,) and it will not be taken away from her.”

Seeking His Light Report

We had a wonderful night at “Seeking His Light” and want to thank everyone who prayed, helped, and participated! God blessed each and everyone of us in beautiful ways and we are ready to do it again! The first BIG blessing was the weather. Friday was cool and overcast with a nice breeze which made set-up pleseant and over night the temperatures dropped into the low 60’s! In the middle of July! Cliff offered to dig a fire pit and we spent some time Friday evening gathering firewood from the surrounding woods. And no bugs! I guess the weather and the fire discouraged them. We thought we would be hot and sweaty and swatting mosquitoes all night and we ended up hugging the fire while wrapped in jackets and blankets.

We really enjoyed sitting around the camp fire all night, worshiping, praying, and sharing our hearts. We were able to hear about and pray for eleven churches and ministries and we had time alone with God to share our personal concerns and hear from Him. Though we made provision for people to sleep if they needed to, everyone stayed awake all night.

We also enjoyed watching the clouds pass over the full moon all night long. We started the night with a concert from the cicadas and it ended with a concert from the birds. How fitting that we were able to join in with creation in praising our creator!

All in all it was a huge success and we are already overflowing with ideas about making our land available to pastors and the community for similar events on a regular basis. Meeting with God in this out-of-the-ordinary way has wet our appetites for more! Please pray for us as we brainstorm about what needs to happen to make our property available for individuals and groups to come and Seek His Face.

Seeking His Light Update

Greetings Family and Friends,

It’s not too late to join us! If you haven’t informed us of your attendance yet, please feel free to come – we would love to have you and we would love to have you experience what God has in store for us.

Here are more details about Seeking His Light, a night of community prayer and worship. Please read through this information carefully as it will maximize everyone’s experience.

This event will be held at the back of the Merrefield’s property. You will need to take a 10 minute hike from the house (in the dark) on a rutted and root encumbered path so GOOD SHOES and a FLASHLIGHT (with extra batteries) are essential! If you would like to attend and are physically unable to make the hike, we will have a truck that can deliver you to the site.

Once we climb the hill, we will gather in a clearing and spend the night in prayer and worship. You will need to bring a LAWN CHAIR and a BLANKET or BEACH TOWEL. Since we will be in the woods all night, you will also want to bring your favorite INSECT REPELLANT.

Grace Valley Ministries will provide toilets, hand sanitizer, coffee, tea, water, and snacks.

Please arrive no later than 11:30 pm as we will need to hike to the clearing as a group. You will not be able to find us if you come late and we would not want you to make the trek alone.

Please plan on staying for the entire event if you can, as we will be praying for different ministries throughout the night. We have carefully considered the schedule and are confident that you will enjoy every moment, and the sunrise worship will be worth the wait!

You may want to wear lightweight long pants to protect your legs and bring a long-sleeved shirt or lightweight sweater in case it gets cool in the middle of the night.

Don’t Forget:

þ Good Shoes

þ Flashlight with extra batteries

þ Lawn Chair and Blanket or Beach Towel

þ Insect Repellant

þ    Bible, Pen, & Book light

  • A backpack would be helpful in carrying your smaller items.
  • You will not need to carry your chairs and blankets on the hike as we have a truck that will deliver these things to us.

Seeking His Light Update

We are excited about Seeking His Light, our first event for Grace Valley Ministries and hope that you are planning to attend. We are praying for you even now and asking God to do a beautiful work in all of our lives through this very special night.

We have carefully considered the timing of this event and believe that God will honor the sacrifices we make to spend this time with him. We encourage you to get some rest during the day on Friday if you can, and come with joyful anticipation of what God will do. Please do not be concerned about being able to stay awake throughout the night. Our schedule is designed to keep things moving and there will be opportunities for you to rest if you need to.

Prayer and Fasting: We ask that you would keep this event in your prayers and if you would like to include fasting we suggest that you may want do so before the event as we will be serving coffee, tea, water, and light snacks throughout the night.

Ministry Participation: One of our goals for this event is to pray for any ministries that are represented. If you have or work for a ministry and would like your ministry recognized and prayed over, please let us know as soon as possible of your attendance. We would like to list your ministry in our literature that will be given to everyone who comes. Please also send us your name, your title, your photo, the name of your ministry, and its location.

Individual Participation: Another goal we have is to pray for each other. You will have several chances to share your personal concerns with a friend or in a small group throughout the night. A men’s group and women’s group prayer time is scheduled as well. There will also be many opportunities during the night for you to be alone with the Lord.

A huge goal that we have for this event is that God would be glorified! We have planned several group worship segments and trust that you will continue with this theme during your personal time with the Lord.

Bring a friend! This event is open to anyone who wishes to come so if you know of someone who would be interested, then please invite them. Be sure to keep them up to date as we will be sending out more information emails as the time draws closer.

RSVP: Please mark your calendars if you haven’t already and RSVP as soon as possible by replying to this email. Please let me know if you will not be able to attend and would like to be removed from this event ‘s email update list.

**Because of the nature of this event, we ask that children be left at home in the care of a sitter.**
